APPLICATIONS OF SEISMIC WAVES
Outside of Earthquakes, the discovery of seismic waves has allowed society to make many uses of seismometers and waves. An industrial application of seismic waves is the use of vibrating instruments to discover pockets of minerals and fuels deep underground. These pockets are discovered when the waves are transmitted through different mediums. As the waves transfer from one medium to another, they are partially transmitted and partially reflected. The reflected wave is then detected by geophones on the surface and then interpreted in terms of what material the varying waves could have reflected off of. Similarly, ships can also cruise over the ocean and send waves to detect oil reserves in the ocean floor.
The video below expands on the process of using seismic waves and geophones to detect patterns below the Earth's surface.
